The National Day of Prayer

May 5,2011 was the National Day of Prayer in the United States. This country was founded on the prayers of its people and leaders. In 1952 Harry S Truman declared and signed into law the annual observance of a National Day of Prayer for our country. There were no specifications on how to pray or who to pray to. Based on the principles of freedom, it was left open to the people to participate within the tenants of their own faith. Obama is not the first president who refused any public observance of this holiday; There have been others on the premise of not showing partiality to any one faith. . ..and the infamous  “separation of church and state”.

Looking back over history, studying the statements and quotes of our founding fathers, we believe their intent of worship was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the Bible. What’s happened? Our President seemingly and openly placates to another religion whose god is not the God of our Judeo- Christian heritage. What’s this nation to do? So far, we’ve cried out and blamed the leaders that we have placed into office because the “priority of the majority” vacillated and personal interest won out over moral and Godly standards!

Elijah had had enough! He decided to have his own National Day of Prayer.

The moment Ahab saw Elijah he said, “So it’s you, old troublemaker!”   “It’s not I who has caused trouble in Israel,” said Elijah, “but you and your government—you’ve dumped God’s ways and commands and run off after the local gods, the Baals. Here’s what I want you to do: Assemble everyone in Israel at Mount Carmel. And make sure that the special pets of Jezebel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of the local gods, the Baals, and the four hundred prophets of the whore goddess Asherah, are there.” I Kings 18:17-19

Elijah confronted Ahab.  Stand up America, and confront sin! Suddenly, it’s quiet;  Ahh, the “silent majority”. Do we really even know what sin is? Those who know truth in Jesus Christ know what sin is and are not ashamed to confront it even if it causes them to be called a “troublemaker”.

Next, Elijah put the responsibility where it truly belonged, back to the people.

Elijah challenged the people: “How long are you going to sit on the fence? If God is the real God, follow him; if it’s Baal, follow him. Make up your minds!” Nobody said a word; nobody made a move. I Kings 18:21

We have been given a “challenge” America. Don’t be guilty of straddling the fence let your voice be heard, Pray!

When it was time for the sacrifice to be offered, Elijah the prophet came up and prayed, “O God, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make it known right now that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I’m doing what I’m doing under your orders. Answer me, God; O answer me and reveal to this people that you are God, the true God, and that you are giving these people another chance at repentance.” Immediately the fire of God fell and burned up the offering, the wood, the stones, the dirt, and even the water in the trench. All the people saw it happen and fell on their faces in awed worship, exclaiming, “God is the true God! God is the true God!”  IKings 18:36-39
